This is not difficult when you know where to look.

Grants

There are many grants available to students and the beauty of grants is that they do not need to be repaid. This means that if you take the time to locate some grant money then you have just stumbled on free money. And there are many kinds of grants that you may be able to obtain.

Federal grants are a great place to start. A few such grants are the Pell Grant, the Academic Competitiveness Grant, and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant. State grants are also available.

These state grants tend to be awarded based upon merit and financial need but you can also find grants based on minority status, group affiliations, or your area of study. You never know what might qualify you for a grant so you need to cover all your bases. Many times grants are awarded to those who are most deserving out of those who apply but you need to apply to even have a chance.

Scholarships and college grants for online colleges are out there. You just have to find them. Unfortunately, most people do not know that you can secure grants and scholarships for online degrees. But now you know better. You could have the flexibility of an online education, the earning power that it bestows upon you, and you could even get significant financial help in paying for your online education.

Online master’s degree programs are typically less expensive than traditional campus college programs, but that doesn’t mean they’re cheap. If you have dreams of getting your advanced degree online, but shudder to think of the costs, scholarships and other forms of financial aid can help you. The following information is what you need to know to find financial aid and earn as many as possible, so you’ll have a few out of pocket costs as possible.

Scholarships Versus Other Forms of Financial Aid

While scholarships are certainly popular, since you don’t have to repay them after you graduate, but they aren’t the only type of financial aid available. First, let’s talk about what a scholarship really is. To qualify for this type of financial aid, you have to show merit of some sort. Some scholarships, for example, are available for those who earn a high GPA as an undergraduate.

Many scholarships also require you to write an essay, making it more of a competition between top students. This isn’t the only form of “free” money for college, though – grants are also readily available. Grants are given to students who should financial need rather than merit, and at the master’s degree level, you can find grants for general tuition as well as grants for specific research projects.

Fellowships are also available. Similar to scholarships because they are based on merit, fellowships are more common at the master’s degree level, but may require you to serve as a student teaching assistant or research assistant.

Qualifying for Scholarships and Financial Aid

If you attend school online, remember that most scholarships and other forms of financial aid require you to prove that your program is accredited. If it is, the vast majority of funds will be open to you the same as they are to other students. Before you apply, make sure you read and understand the application directions carefully – if you don’t follow them perfectly, you might be disqualified.

Financial aid is most commonly available directly from your college, but you can also find them from other sources, like government departments and community organizations. Your school’s financial aid department can help you learn about all of the places to find financial aid.
